Fertility Testing in San Diego

San Diego's Most Comprehensive Fertility Testing

If you hope to have a baby someday—even if not in the near future—you should consider getting a fertility checkup soon. There are a number of “silent” conditions that can affect fertility over time without ever showing symptoms. Some of these conditions can be treated (the earlier, the better) and some prevented from worsening.

The Purpose of Fertility Testing

Gaining awareness of the state of your fertility well in advance of when you start trying to conceive gives you and your physician a baseline from which to work. This is important for two reasons. It enables you to identify and act upon any issues that could cause reproductive problems later, and it will help your physician measure any changes in your reproductive health over the years to come.

What the Test Involves

Your physician will start by taking a thorough medical history, with particular focus on the details of your menstrual cycle, any STDs, past pregnancies or miscarriages, and any known hormonal issues. A physical exam and transvaginal ultrasound will follow, along with a series of blood tests.

In order to rule out physical abnormalities within your reproductive system, your physician may also recommend a hysterosalpingogram, which is an x-ray of your uterus and fallopian tubes.

All of these tests allow your physician to determine whether you are ovulating, what your ovarian reserve is, whether you have any chronic conditions like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and much more.

Your Fertility Testing Options

Learn what to expect from the fertility testing process by exploring common diagnostic tests and why they’re important. You and your physician will discuss what’s best for you.

1

Ultrasound to Evaluate Antral Follicle Count

An antral follicle count ultrasound measures the number of small follicles in your ovaries to help assess your ovarian reserve—or how many eggs remain. This quick, noninvasive test provides key insights into your fertility potential and helps your physician tailor your treatment plan.

2

Sonohysterogram (SHG)

A sonohysterogram uses a small amount of sterile saline and ultrasound imaging to evaluate the uterine cavity. It helps identify polyps, fibroids, scar tissue, or other structural issues that could impact implantation or pregnancy success.

3

Flexible Hysteroscopy

A flexible hysteroscopy allows your physician to directly view the inside of your uterus using a thin, lighted scope. This in-office procedure provides a detailed look at the uterine lining and can detect abnormalities that might interfere with fertility or cause irregular bleeding.

4

Endometrial Biopsy

An endometrial biopsy involves collecting a small tissue sample from the uterine lining to evaluate hormone response and uterine health. This test can help identify conditions such as endometritis or luteal phase defects that may impact conception or embryo implantation.

5

Semen Analysis

A semen analysis assesses sperm count, movement, and shape to determine male fertility potential. Results help guide treatment recommendations and identify whether factors like low motility or morphology may be affecting conception chances.

6

Genetic Testing

Genetic testing helps identify whether you or your partner carry inherited conditions that could be passed on to a child. This simple blood or saliva test provides important information for family planning and can guide decisions about IVF or preimplantation genetic testing (PGT).
