The Purpose of Fertility Testing

Gaining awareness of the state of your fertility well in advance of when you start trying to conceive gives you and your physician a baseline from which to work. This is important for two reasons. It enables you to identify and act upon any issues that could cause reproductive problems later, and it will help your physician measure any changes in your reproductive health over the years to come.

What the Test Involves

Your physician will start by taking a thorough medical history, with particular focus on the details of your menstrual cycle, any STDs, past pregnancies or miscarriages, and any known hormonal issues. A physical exam and transvaginal ultrasound will follow, along with a series of blood tests.

In order to rule out physical abnormalities within your reproductive system, your physician may also recommend a hysterosalpingogram, which is an x-ray of your uterus and fallopian tubes.

All of these tests allow your physician to determine whether you are ovulating, what your ovarian reserve is, whether you have any chronic conditions like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and much more.
